Prototype information

The Henschel-Wegmann train set was intended to compete with diesel railcars, which allowed a quick change of direction at the respective terminal stations. The aim was therefore to avoid time-consuming procedures such as the turning on a turntable that is usually necessary for express train locomotives with tenders. This meant that the train set's locomotive should be able to travel in both directions at the same top speed, which is why it was designed as a tender locomotive.
In order to achieve the intended performance, the locomotive and the carriages were designed to be particularly light; the coal and water supplies were just sufficient for a single trip on the intended route.With the 2.30 meter diameter drive wheels, the locomotives easily reached the intended top speed of 175 km/h without impermissibly high engine speeds and piston speeds; During test runs, locomotive 61 001 reached a maximum speed of 185 km/h. However, the streamlined train only travelled at 130 km/h. The scheduled service between Dresden and Berlin was carried out successfully, the 176-kilometre route was covered in just 102 minutes, a time that has not been beaten on this route to date (2011) despite faster electric locomotives.
The train's stopover time in Dresden was quite short, as the locomotive not only had to be moved to the other end of the train, but also had to be replaced due to the limited supplies.
If locomotive 61 001 or the carriage set failed due to scheduled or unscheduled work, a locomotive from the 01 or 03 series was used. However, at 130 km/h, they did not reach the top speed of the 61 001. After the train service was stopped at the beginning of the war in 1939, the 61 001 was used for heating services in the Berlin-Grunewald railway depot. From December 1940, it was back in express train service in Dresden-Altstadt and received conventional pulling and buffer devices in November 1942.
The striking color scheme was also replaced by gray. Later, the lower part of the paneling was also removed so that the engine could be more easily accessed. The operating records show only low mileage. From 1943 until the end of the war, the Braunschweig repair shop was responsible for the locomotive. Between July 1945 and March 1946, it covered around 40,000 kilometers in front of passenger trains.
