Prototype information
As part of the large network of international express trains operating in Europe since the 1950s, the so-called "Italy-Holland Express" or "Holland-Italy Express" (whether running south-north or north-south), connecting Rome with Amsterdam, has always played a prominent role. It crosses not only Italy and Holland, but also Switzerland via Chiasso/Gotthard and Germany along the Rhine valley, with stops in major cities such as Milan, Basel, Bonn, Cologne and Utrecht, to name but a few. As always in such cases, the composition varied considerably along the route, as there were not only sections to Amsterdam, but also those restricted to Switzerland or Germany (e.g. to Basel, Dortmund, Frankfurt or Emmerich, depending on the period) or originating from Switzerland or Germany; at certain times of the year (summer or during holidays) the train ran in Italy from tourist resorts such as Ventimiglia (for the Ligurian Riviera) or Rimini (for the Romagna Riviera), while in the early 1990s it was restricted to Milan instead of Rome.
Due to the great distance, this train has always had, in addition to the normal day and baggage carriages, sleeping and couchette cars in its composition, generally in the hands of FS, DB and NS, but occasionally sleeping cars of the SNCF or SBB have also been seen in its composition.
