Prototype information


The ETR.460s are characterized by variable trim actuators mounted in an almost horizontal position between the car body and the carriage, which makes the overall dimensions of these devices smaller compared to previous trains that had them in a vertical position.
Like the ETR-450s, the ETR-460s were initially designed only as 1st class trains, but in the summer of 1993, when construction of the first examples had already begun, the FS decided to include also the 2nd class service, which required the introduction of a partial redesign that led to a delay in the delivery of the first trains: on 12 June 1994 the first train left the gates of FIAT Ferroviaria in the provisional composition of only 6 elements (two trainsets) of 1st class only, which it happened also for the next two trains. In the following months the compositions were then reorganised and completed with all the 2nd class elements and the bar/refreshment cars. The ETR-460s entered service for the first time in the early months of 1995, thus assuming the role of the flagship of the FS. At first they gradually replaced the ETR-450s on the Milan-Rome route. After the deliveries of all ten convoys (numbered from 21 to 30) were completed, they were also used on the routes between Turin and Venice and between Turin, Genoa and Rome. From autumn 1996, however, they lost priority on the Milan-Rome route, being gradually replaced by the new ETR-500s and thus transferred to other routes.
