Brawa 50143 - H0 Covered freight car Kmmhs56 "Brandt" DB
Prototype information
The International Union of Railways (Union internationale des chemins de fer, UIC) founded its own research and development institute (ORE) in 1949, thereby laying the foundation for internationally valid construction principles for freight wagons. The European railway administrations soon developed their own vehicles based on the drafts and principles developed by the ORE for a two-axle standard freight wagon. In keeping with the basic idea of the UIC, these could be used to transport goods and commodities within the areas of the member administrations. The German Federal Railways made a start with the first 3,500 wagons (based on the preliminary drafts) and was able to put the first 2,662 real UIC standard wagons into operation as early as 1957 with the Gmm(e)hs 56. The standardized design was identified externally by the inscription RIV St UIC. Other railway administrations such as SNCF, FS, ÖBB, NS, DSB, MAV, PKP, CFL and SBB acted in a similar way and manufactured their own versions of the UIC standard carriages. As a result, the carriages are all very similar, but also show country-specific design differences. Since the DB itself had a very large need for new carriages and there was also a backlog of modernization of older carriage types, not only did completely new UIC St carriages have to be built. In several conversion programs, in which individual parts of older wagons were reused, the wagon types Gmms 44, Gmm(eh)s 60, Gmms 40 and 216 were gradually created. From the 1960s to the 1990s, these wagon types were characteristic of freight transport in Europe and, with over 100,000 units built, they were included in almost every freight train.
