BRAWA 49132 - H0 container wagon BTmms 58 DB, with Efkr 401 “Birkel”
Prototype information
Derived from the BTms 55, which was designed for four pa containers, the SEAG company built two prototypes of the BTmms 58 in 1958. One made of light metal and the other made of ST 52 steel. The built car could now be loaded with five pa containers. This increased the specific load weight, which gave the carrier the advantage of being able to pay cheaper freight rates. The prototype made of steel proved its worth and was further developed to series maturity, so that series production could begin in 1960. In the following six years, a total of 2,100 BTmms 58 cars were built. To make handling and loading easier, each car had a transition platform at one end above the buffers or a handbrake platform in front of the vehicle frame. The DB swapped the 35-t buffers for 59-t high-performance buffers, which were also used from the beginning on the cars built from 1964 onwards. From the end of the 1970s, a large number of vehicles were prepared to accept the AK69e automatic center buffer coupling, but this was ultimately not installed. From 1955 onwards, special pa containers were developed to transport beer, which were mostly used as private containers for individual breweries and were labeled with the respective house advertising in an appropriately effective way. In addition, the Deutsche Bundesbahn also kept its own, which it also kept for other liquid foodstuffs. In total, around 200 containers of the Ddikr 621-624 types were built by 1972, with a capacity of 5 m³. The use of beer containers on rails was phased out at the end of the 1980s. However, they are still occasionally used by breweries today for major events, among other things.
