BRAWA 61216 - N diesel locomotive BR V160 DB
Role model information
Until the mid-1950s, engine technology did not allow building a mainline diesel locomotive with just one engine and sufficient power. Consequently, the V200 and V200.1 series were created. These were equipped with two propulsion systems to fulfill their performance program. However, the manufacturers were working hard on more powerful engines and by the end of the decade an output of 1400 kW from just one machine system was no longer an illusion. As early as 1956, Krupp began developing a medium-duty mainline diesel locomotive with an engine, steam heating and a Vmax of 120 km/h. In 1960, Krupp and Henschel delivered a total of ten pre-series machines.
Nine were nicknamed “Lollo” because of their appearance, based on Gina Lollobrigida. The tenth locomotive already had a sober, much more angular shape, which was significantly cheaper to produce and was therefore adopted for the series. The machines proved themselves in freight train service and passenger traffic and were built in series from 1964 to 1968 after extensive testing. In total, Krupp, Henschel, KHD, Krauss-Maffei and MaK delivered 214 series locomotives. They were deployed throughout Germany. With the delivery of the BR 218 and the increasing use of electric train heating, it was used more and more in freight transport. After the model locomotives were retired by 1984, the series locomotives began to be phased out in 1993. More and more railcars were used in travel, which led to a further displacement of diesel locomotives. When freight traffic declined, the BR 232 came from the DR. With this locomotive it was possible to replace a double unit. By 2004, all 216 had been retired. However, numerous locomotives went to private utilities at home and abroad, and some have now even returned and are in use in near-original condition. The DB Museum will receive, among other things, the 216 003 in Lübeck and the 216 067 in Koblenz.
