Due to increased train weights in express train traffic, the designer most influential in Austrian steam locomotive construction, Ing. Dr. hc Karl Gölsdorf, developed a new express train locomotive with the 1'C2' wheel arrangement from 1906. This axle arrangement, which was "reversed" compared to the Pacific design popular in many countries, made it possible to accommodate a large vertical boiler with a wide grate. Together with the massive four-cylinder compound engine, a highly powerful machine was created despite the low Austrian axle load limit of just 14.5 t, which many railway enthusiasts consider to be the most beautiful steam locomotive in Austria.
While the first 11 machines were delivered in wet steam versions, the other 90 examples of this type were put into service as superheated steam locomotives of the 310 series and were used by the kkStB mainly on the Northern, Franz Josef and Western Railway between Vienna and Salzburg in high-quality passenger train service.
The "Russian glossy sheet", known as "blue sheet" for short, was an alternative to primed and painted sheet metal in the early railway eras, but also an aesthetic element. It was only used in areas with high heat radiation, such as the boiler and cylinder cladding.
Black and white images suggest that locomotives of the 310 series also received "blue sheet" cladding. Colored images also support this assumption. In terms of color design, the black smoke chamber cladding sets a special accent. The appearance of this unusually designed locomotive therefore appears very successful
