The term reconstruction locomotive was introduced in 1957 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The term is used for series of steam locomotives of the DR, on which considerable conversion work was carried out to increase performance and to adapt to the fuel situation in the GDR (shortage of hard coal) and to eliminate design errors. The rebuilt locomotives of the 52.80 series were built by the DR from 1960 onwards from the fundamentally revised war locomotive of the 52 series. Since the Reichsbahnen did not always have all colours in stock, some machines were given brown chassis.
