The standard passenger train tender locomotives of the 64 series were developed by the German Reichsbahn Company from 1926 onwards. As of July 1, 1950, the German Reichsbahn (DR) had exactly 129 locomotives listed in its maintenance inventory.
64 1455 was transferred from the Jerichow depot to the Salzwedel depot in 1972. There it was used in front of special trains for the farewell journeys of 24 009 and 37 1009, which both locomotives pulled together.
