In the 1970s, the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) had a great need for powerful freight train diesel locomotives for medium-heavy shunting and mainline service. As a result, the lighter variant T 466.2 was derived from the industrial locomotive type T 448. It was manufactured by ČKD in Prague from 1977 in nine series (each with small differences) with 494 units and was put into service by ČSD until 1986.
