The E.656 group of electric locomotives represents the latest development of the large family of FS "articulated locomotives", characterized by the mechanical arrangement with two half-cars on three two-axle bogies, each with two motors (in this case twin motors), introduced in 1940 with the E636 and maintained until the production of the last E656 in 1989.
The E656s were delivered from 1975 in a total of 461 units, divided into six series that differ in technical and aesthetic terms, due to the evolution of the design during construction. Thanks to their high power (4200 kW continuously, 4800 kW hourly) and a maximum speed of 150 km/h, they were immediately destined to take over the most important long-distance passenger trains of the time, prestige trains such as some TEEs, but also direct or local trains with numerous stops, up to heavy freight traffic at the limit of their capacity, and quickly became one of the pillars of the FS traction fleet
Technical details
- New shapes for the car body, bogies and associated parts, with exact reproduction of all the typical features of the various series on the front, sides and roof.
- Reliable mechanics with articulated chassis and metal gears, powerful 5-pole central motor with double universal joint drive on both axles of the end cars, two wheels with hand ring.
- Completely new electrics with 21-pin NEM 660/21MTC socket for DCC decoder and DCC sound, with preparation for 11 x 15 mm "sugar cube" loudspeakers.
- "S" versions with Hornby HM7000 sound decoder and loudspeaker installed as standard, with model-specific sounds.
- White headlight and red tail light with automatic switching depending on the direction of travel and with the option of independent switching between the two driver's cabs. Position of the red lights consistently differentiated according to the device being played.
- Third headlight with independent control of the dipped beam.
- Interior lighting of the two cabins and the side aisle can be controlled independently of each other.
- A central skid can be installed for operation on 3-rail systems, with the system switching being carried out via jumpers on the circuit board.
