Prototype information

Until the 1920s, all German railway companies used hand brakes on freight trains. The train crew therefore included, in addition to the locomotive crew, a train conductor as the highest authority, a packing master, train conductor and shunter as well as several brakemen. The brakemen were responsible for braking the train, shunting during stops en route, exchanging and processing freight documents for the goods being transported. For this purpose, an escort car was placed behind the locomotive, which served as a rolling work and rest area. Only the brakemen had to sit in one of the brakeman's cabins during the journey. As a conclusion to its own development, the KPEV first purchased Pwg according to model sheet pr IIa13a in 1913/14. After the end of the First World War, this design was chosen to replace the old or missing escort cars of most German state railways. From the second revised edition of the model sheet, over 7,000 Pwg were built by 1929 and spread not only in the former KPEV area, but also in Baden and Bavaria, Württemberg and Saxony. Allegedly because of an attempted robbery on a train, the DRB removed the continuous running boards and handrails from the end of the 1930s. Further conversion measures before the start of the war included strengthening the car body frame and removing the window in the loading area door.
