BRAWA 48804 - H0 coal hopper wagon KPEV, unit of 2
Role model information
With the onset of the industrial revolution, more and more steel industry plants were quickly built in Saarland. The deposits of hard coal and the Lorraine ore mined nearby make production seem interesting in many places. From 1883 onwards, the Prussian State Railway purchased special coal hopper wagons especially to supply these smelters and steelworks.
A funnel-shaped structure sat on a base frame with a 2800 mm wheel base, which was secured by a flap on the left and right, as well as by floor flaps above a deep bunker , could be discharged suddenly. With a loading space of 13.2 m3, the wagons had a loading weight of 10 t. Since the design proved successful in its specific area of application, the design was revised and a reinforced design was purchased from 1897. The wagons built according to model sheet IIc12 had a larger loading space with a capacity of 15.3 m3 and could now load 12.5 t.
230 of these larger wagons were built by 1905. As with the previous model, there were only unbraked cars and cars with handbrakes. The Deutsche Reichsbahn took over all the cars and classified them as Otr(u) in the “Mainz” class district, and continued to use them exclusively in Saarland. Today there is little of this industrial glory left. A producing steelworks on the Saar is still located in Dillingen today. The Völklingen Ironworks was completely preserved after it was decommissioned and is now a unique museum that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to all kinds of cultural events, you can find impressive information about steel production and its history here. The exhibits also include several railway vehicles from different eras, which are shown in their historical surroundings.
