BRAWA 65148 - N passenger car Bmhe DR

Role model information

Until 1977, Raw Halberstadt produced over 3,000 four-axle Reko wagons for the DR, whose body length at the time represented a concession to the structural conditions of the Raw. In the meantime, however, these cars were no longer up-to-date for commuter and local transport and were no longer suitable for high-quality operations. Since the GDR's wagon industry was completely busy with export orders, only Raw Halberstadt was considered for building the new wagon. Because the facilities there had now been expanded, the new vehicle was now able to fully utilize the UIC dimension of 26.4 m. A model car was created as early as 1973, followed by a second one in 1975. Both have been extensively tested in daily operation. The vernacular quickly coined the name “Langer Halberstädter” for them, which was certainly related to the famous sausages produced here. Already during construction, the DR demanded that the car should also be suitable for “high-quality international operations”, which of course had to lead to compromises in the design. The result was a car with two entrances and three passenger compartments with a central aisle. At first glance, the Bmhe appears to be a copy of the DB Silberlinge, but it is more of a further development of the Bghwe wagons, taking many new components into account. This is also clear in the dead weight, because at 39 t it is quite high and therefore did not correspond to the “world standard” that was so often aimed for in the GDR. The wagons proved their worth in operation and were definitely perceived as progress by travelers. In accordance with the requirements when ordering, they were initially used almost exclusively in express trains in national and international transport. They also reached goals in the CSSR, Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany. The cars delivered from 1982 received the new green-ivory paint for express train cars. Some cars that reinforced the city express trains were given an orange-ivory color scheme. By 1983, a total of 1,279 Bmhe cars were built and listed under the DOK number 2329. Starting in 1981, the DR tested the central energy supply (ZEV) from the locomotive in ten cars. Cars equipped in this way bore the name Bmhee. There were no major changes to the Bmh cars until 1989 (the “e” was dropped from 1987). Together with Reko and modernization coaches, they formed the backbone of the DR's passenger and express train fleet for so many years and shaped its train appearance.
