For the Heidenau - Altenberg (Müglitztalbahn) railway line, which had been converted to standard gauge, the German Reichsbahn needed passenger carriages with a low deadweight and with an additional central entrance for quick passenger changes. In 1935/36, the Linke-Hofmann company initially delivered four test cars of the 3rd class (C4i-35) and two cars of the 2nd/3rd class (BC4i-35), which were successfully tested in the Dresden area. The Reichsbahn then ordered a total of 30 cars of the type BC4i-35 and 60 cars of the type C4i-35. At normal capacity, the trains were made up of 3 passenger cars (C4i + BC4i + C4i). At peak times, the combination was simply doubled.
