Despite all efforts to convert to railcars, DB Regio urgently needed modern, high-speed electric locomotives for use in local transport for use in front of double-decker trains up to 160 km/h. Therefore, the manufacturer Bombardier was commissioned to produce a special variant of the BR 145 for local transport, which was classified as the 146 series. The biggest difference to the BR 145 is the hollow shaft drive approved for 160 km/h instead of the traction bearing drive and the unmistakable train destination display. A total of 31 locomotives were delivered to DB Regio between 2001 and 2002. Two further series followed later.
