As a more powerful version of the 132 series, the diesel-electric locomotive of the 142 series is a real powerhouse that has 4,000 hp. The locomotives were used on all those routes on which the 132 had to be driven with a leading engine or could not reach or maintain the specified speed with heavy trains. The first "4000 hp locomotive" was completed in 1974 and presented at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1975. A total of six locomotives were delivered by 1978.
