The steam locomotives of the series 03.10 that remained with the Deutsche Reichsbahn received a new high-performance boiler from 1959, as this was intended to achieve greater economic efficiency in daily operation. The machines were known as so-called "reco locomotives". They also received a square mixer preheater arranged in front of the chimney. A few years later, in 1965, all the machines that remained in the DR's fleet were converted to oil-fired mains. The locomotives were used in daily express train services before most of the machines were retired in the 1970s and rolled onto the sidings. During their years of service with the DR, they achieved record-breaking mileage of around 20,000 kilometers a month.
