The former stars of the DRG were mostly in a shockingly bad condition after the Second World War - especially in the area of the streamlined cladding. Initially, they were planned to be decommissioned. However, the great shortage of locomotives led to the decision to refurbish all machines. As part of an L4, the remains of the streamlined shell were removed. Because of the severely worn boilers made of St 47 K, the DB decided in 1953 to equip all 01.10s with a welded high-performance boiler with a combustion chamber.
The locomotive 01 1062, which was put into service in 1940, received its new boiler in 1954. As part of the renumbering to computer-compatible numbers, it was renumbered 011 062-7 in 1968. In the last few years before the Z-position, it was assigned to the Rheine depot, where it left service in 1973 and was looked after particularly carefully.
