The 50 series, probably the most important DB steam locomotive of the 1950s/60s with many design variants, had proven itself at the time for almost all types of trains on main and branch lines. More than 60 important variants ultimately ensured that hardly any 50 had a completely identical appearance to a sister locomotive. The 1'E freight locomotives, built in around 3,100 units from 1939 onwards, were considered robust, powerful, easy to maintain and extremely reliable. After 1945, over 2,000 locomotives remained with the Deutsche Bundesbahn. The machines reached a top speed of 80 km/h, produced around 1,200 kW and had an axle load of 15 t.
When the computerised series scheme was introduced in 1968, there were still 1,452 machines in the DB's inventory. Since the serial number could only have three digits, in addition to the series number 050, the
