Between 1959 and 1963, the Deutsche Reichsbahn of the former GDR modernized a total of 208 locomotives of the 50 series. As a result of these modifications, the locomotives, now known as the 50.35–37 series, differed significantly from the original version, particularly in terms of the boiler/boiler equipment. These machines, which now had an output of 1,300 kW and a top speed of 80 km/h, were used primarily on flatland routes (including passenger trains). They also occasionally made it to western Germany.
