The modern BR 23 of the German Federal Railway "outlived" the Prussian P 8 - it was intended as its replacement - by only one year. It produced 1,314 kW, weighed 131.8 t and traveled 110 km/h forwards or 85 km/h with the tender ahead. On December 31, 1971, 76 machines were in the maintenance inventory and were stationed without exception in three railway depots (Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern and Crailsheim). After the official decommissioning in December 1975, 8 examples have been preserved for posterity in clubs and museums, some of them in operational condition.
