The locomotive factory in Vienna-Floridsdorf produced over 1,100 locomotives of the 52 series. 113 locomotives remained in Austria after the end of the war. Improvements were made to many machines, for example the tub tenders were sometimes fitted with cabins, making it possible to have a train driver's compartment.
Towards the end of the steam locomotive era, there were individual variations in the paintwork on some 52s, which were initiated by the staff. The Strasshof train company on the Nordbahn had some of the "colorful" steam locomotives, which were not untypical for the time, in its engine house. The last examples were retired in 1976 and were thus among the last steam locomotives on the ÖBB's standard gauge network.
