In the east of Germany, the 50 series played a key role for longer than in the west. In terms of numbers, comparatively few locomotives remained in the Soviet occupation zone at the end of the war, with 354 units.
Over time, different locomotive-tender combinations emerged. The new tenders of the 23.10 and 50.40 series were increasingly used behind the old 50 series after they were decommissioned. However, because there was no continuous back wall, this combination was not particularly popular with the staff, especially in winter.
