When the Deutsche Reichsbahn replaced most of the old passenger carriages with new and reconditioned passenger carriages in the 1970s, the last four-axle express train carriages of the standard design from the years 1928–1932 were combined to form the Deutsche Reichsbahn's traditional train.
The three 2nd class carriages and the associated baggage car were used in regular train service on the Rbd Greifswald until 1977. The combined 1st/2nd class carriage was parked in Dresden-Pieschen at the time. This train set included the only DR express train carriages with a central aisle and bellows transition that were still operational. This gave rise to the carriage set known as the "Zwickau traditional train".
In 1985, the railway's anniversary year, the complete restoration of the traditional train was a significant step in the preservation of museum vehicles. The members of the working group at the time played a not insignificant role in ensuring that the traditional train attracted a lot of attention beyond the country's borders.
