Due to the increased frequency of express train services in cities, In the 1975 summer timetable, the 4010 series of railcars were increasingly used on the Western Railway. To replace these sets, locomotive-hauled carriage trains with the then modern Schlieren cars were to be used on the Southern Railway. In order to offer passengers there more quality, the Schlieren cars used in these trains were given plush-covered seats instead of the previous imitation leather seating. While the 1st class carriages were upgraded from cars already in stock, the 2nd class carriages initially mostly came from cars from the 300 series that were just being delivered. These train sets were supplemented with newly acquired cars for the mobile buffet service - the so-called "Stamperlwagen" - from the same series.
These "city express train sets" were also intended to be eye-catching externally. Therefore, the paintwork of these cars was based on the ET 4010, although blood orange was used instead of blue to match the 1042.5 series, which was to be used in front of these trains. In the train formation plans, these cars were marked as "g. K." - cars with a higher level of comfort. These trains in blood orange and ivory were very conspicuous and looked much more pleasing than the previously predominant green tones. The term "Jaffa Express" was quickly born. After the delivery of 1044.01 and 02, these two locomotives could also be seen on these routes.
