The Italian State Railways (FS) purchased a total of 9 diesel railcars of the ALn 442/448 series from the Italian manufacturer Breda for high-quality passenger train service on diesel routes. They were mainly used as a replacement for locomotive-hauled TEE trains until 1972. Food and drinks were prepared in a specially installed on-board kitchen, which was served to passengers directly at their seats due to the lack of a restaurant area. After being used as TEE, the trains were rebuilt, with the kitchen removed and seats installed in their place, hence the designation changed to ALn 448/460. These were used as express trains, especially in southern Italy. The ALn were very popular with passengers, especially due to their high level of comfort and short travel times (the multiple units could travel at 140 km/h).
