In order to replace the outdated railcars of the M 131.1 series, the Czechoslovak State Railways purchased new two-axle diesel railcars with the series designation M 152.0. The vehicles, which were delivered in series from 1975, were powered by a 155 kW six-cylinder in-line engine and reached a top speed of 80 km/h. There were 56 seats available in the passenger compartment.
After the division of Czechoslovakia into the successor states of the Czech Republic and Slovakia on January 1, 1993, the vehicles were divided between the newly founded state railways CD and ZSR. Since December 2004, the vehicles in Slovakia have been part of the fleet of the successor company ZSSK.
