In order to replace the outdated railcars of the M 131.1 series, the Czechoslovak State Railways purchased new two-axle diesel railcars with the series designation M 152.0. The vehicles, which went into series production in 1975, were powered by a 155 kW six-cylinder in-line engine and reached a top speed of 80 km/h. There were 56 seats in the passenger compartment.
Over time, many color variants emerged. The variant with a beige belly band became established in the 1980s on the Czechoslovak State Railways. After the division of the CSD, the railcars, with and without trailers, were also used on all branch lines of the Czech State Railways (CD).
