Adtranz (later Stadler Rail) developed four-axle regional railcars with diesel engines for use on branch lines. These were sold under the name "Regio Shuttle" or "RS1" for short. The vehicle concept was particularly well received by private railways. By 2013, a total of almost 500 Regioshuttles had rolled off the production line. The RS1 is designed for a top speed of 120 km/h and, depending on the variant, offers up to 101 seats and 94 standing places.
