The French State Railways (SNCF) put the CC 6500 electric locomotives into service in 1969, the most powerful locomotives in French railway history to date. A total of 74 locomotives were built in three series with different side walls. In the first years of operation, the locomotives were mainly used to pull well-known express trains such as the "Mistral" or the "Capitole" due to their maximum speed of 200 km/h.
