For decades, one of the special services of the 151 series was the transport of the heaviest ore trains in Western Europe between the North Sea ports and the Peine-Salzgitter steelworks and to Saarland. The trains reached loads of up to 5,700 tons. The trains were driven exclusively in double traction and with an automatic coupling, as the conventional screw coupling would not have been able to withstand the very high tensile forces.
