The progressive electrification of the DR route network required the development of a four-axle electric locomotive in the early 1980s. Originally two versions were planned. As series 212 with a top speed of 160 km/h for express train service and as series 243 with a top speed of 120 km/h for passenger and freight train service. In 1982 the 140 km/h test machine 212 001 of the LEW Hennigsdorf was presented at the Leipzig Spring Fair. However, since the DR speed concept at the time only provided for a maximum speed of 120 km/h, the 212 did not go into series production.
The prototype of the 212 series was initially used for an extensive test program. It was then sent to the Dessau depot for test disassembly. This was used to determine economical maintenance and to check the main components. In the course of this, the gear ratio was changed, the maximum speed was reduced to 120 km/h and the locomotive was renumbered to 243 001. In the subsequent test program, the "White Lady" consistently proved its reliability. The Deutsche Reichsbahn then returned the prototype to the manufacturer KLEW.
