In 2019, the ÖBB started an upgrade program to renew the double-decker trains (DOSTO). This will optimize around 100 carriages to modern Cityjet level by 2023. The modernization includes, among other things, on-board WiFi, new seat covers, multi-purpose areas in each intermediate car with more space for bicycles, strollers and luggage, and newly furnished rest areas.
In May 2022, halfway through the current DOSTO upgrade program, the electric locomotive 1116 181 was painted in the Cityjet design. With this, ÖBB is sending an important signal for attractive offers in public transport and especially commuter transport in Lower Austria.
