As they got older, the Re 421 fleet of the SBB Cargo were among the first locomotives of the entire Re 4/4 family to be put up for sale.
The Re 421 series arose from the last delivered Re 4/4 II series 11371 - 11397 built between 1983 and 1985, which were built between 2002 and 2003. and converted for use in Germany in 2004. The 26 locomotives (excluding 11382, which was decommissioned in 2002 due to a fire) were intended to supplement the Re 482 fleet delivered from 2002 for cross-border traffic between Germany and Switzerland and were also intended for domestic traffic for SBB Cargo Germany. Later, the locomotives were largely leased to foreign railway companies.

While the leasing of locomotives to private companies declined with the increasing number of new locomotives and leasing companies entering the market, the Re 421s were increasingly pushed out to Switzerland. Because the machines were never upgraded with air conditioning and the ETCS equipment, which is becoming increasingly important in Switzerland, the locomotives were put up for sale early on.

Widmer Rail Services (WRS) was the first company to secure the two locomotives Re 421 373 + 381 in January 2018, which today provide a valuable service for the Swiss-based company.
