From 1976, the French State Railways purchased a total of 237 locomotives of the multi-purpose locomotive BB 7200 for use on the French direct current network. The design of the locomotives with the so-called "nez cassé" (broken nose) comes from by the Frenchman Paul Arzens. Some locomotives had special buffers for towing the "Talgo III RD" trains, which could be switched gauges. The buffer body was painted red for identification.
