The history of the silver-painted ES64U2 locomotives begins in 2000, although the first machine of this type was not built for the ÖBB. In September of the same year, the Siemens works in Munich-Allach delivered a locomotive with the operating number 1116 901.
Siemens decided to build some additional ES64U2 and ES64F machines, which were being built in large numbers for various customers at the time, as the basis for a pool for its new leasing activities. Siemens Dispolok GmbH is established as an independent subsidiary to manage the locomotive pool. Hupac SA, one of the leading providers of rail transport in intermodal traffic through the Swiss Alps, was one of the first customers for the new Siemens pool and was able to have its locomotive painted in its own company colours.
In 2002, all three machines were converted for operation in Switzerland, using the Swiss safety/signalling systems ZUB/Integra and pantographs with smaller contacts (1450 mm) required for operation in the numerous Swiss tunnels.
All three machines are used in Germany and Switzerland for many different services, not only for the transport of Hupac convoys, but also for Hupac partners and other open access operators who need traction for a certain period of time.
