From 1976 onwards, the French State Railways purchased a total of 237 locomotives of the multi-purpose locomotive BB 7200 for use on the French direct current network. The design of the locomotives with the so-called "nez cassé" (broken nose) was created by the Frenchman Paul Arzens. Some locomotives had special buffers for towing the gauge-changing "Talgo III RD" trains. The buffer body was painted red for identification.
