From 1955 onwards, the Deutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR developed the diesel-hydraulic locomotive V 60 for medium-heavy shunting service. These machines were primarily intended to end the inefficient use of steam locomotives in shunting service. From 1962 to 1964, the first series of 163 locomotives was delivered to the DR by LKM Babelsberg. During the construction of the first main series, a rain protection roof was mounted over the side windows. Due to a new service regulation, DR shunting locomotives were gradually given an orange-yellow paint job during overhauls.
