In the mid-1960s, the ÖBB commissioned a new series of diesel locomotives to replace the steam locomotives of the 52, 77 and 93 series. After a few prototypes, the Jenbach works delivered the 2043 series with a 1,500 hp two-stroke diesel engine. Originally it was approved for 100 km/h, later for 110. With an axle load of 17 t it was also suitable for use on branch lines.
