They were normal series locomotives, but they were still protected like a national treasure - the GDR government locomotives.
The home depot of the three government locomotives was the Lichtenberg depot and after 1970 this belonged to the Ostbahnhof depot as Est (deployment location). What was not so well known is that there was another V180 / BR 118 in government use. The 118 514 was considered a reserve locomotive and served in various depots in the Berlin area and was only used as a government locomotive in emergencies. When one of the three main R-Zug locomotives had to be on reserve duty, the 118 514 was "detached" from normal scheduled service to the R-Zug Brigade.
