The history of the M62, known in Hungary as "Szergej", began in 1965 with the delivery of the world's first locomotive from Lugansk (M62 001). A further 288 locomotives were delivered to the MAV, 15 of them in broad gauge versions.
The locomotives took over heavy freight transport and thus brought an early end to the use of the older steam locomotive types. Some of the robust machines are still in operation today. The M62 127, which has a retro paint job, is particularly popular with railway enthusiasts.
