From 1971, the German Federal Railway put 398 series locomotives of the BR 218 into service and used them for both passenger and freight trains. They are used on most non-electrified routes and reach a top speed of 140 km/h with an output of 1,840 kW.
The 218 series has gone through a number of color variations over time. The first 218s were delivered in the purple color scheme that is usual for diesel locomotives. From 1975 onwards, the colors ocean blue/beige determined the external appearance of the locomotives.
