In the 1970s, the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) had a great need for powerful freight train diesel locomotives for medium-heavy shunting and mainline service. As a result, the lighter variant T 466.2 was derived from the industrial locomotive type T 448. It was manufactured by ČKD in Prague from 1977 in nine series (each with small differences) with 494 units and put into service by ČSD until 1986.
In 1998, the series designation T 466.2 was changed to 742. Many locomotives are still in use for CD Cargo on Czech railways in freight transport.
