For shunting passenger and freight cars in stations, the Deutsche Bundesbahn relied early on on smaller shunting locomotives. A further development of the Köf 11, with power transmission via cardan shafts and additional axle gears, was presented by Gmeinder in 1965. 251 shunting locomotives of this design, initially known as Köf 12, were delivered to the German Federal Railway as the 333 series. In order to save on personnel, a large proportion of the locomotives were equipped with radio remote control from the end of the 1980s. These locomotives were known as the 335 series. Some of these small locomotives were still in service with the Bahnbau Group from 2010.
