In order to cope with the increased volume of traffic on the non-electrified main routes, the German Federal Railway purchased a total of 50 locomotives of the V 200.1 series from 1962 onwards. They differed from their predecessors in that they had more powerful engines. These were necessary for increasingly longer and therefore heavier passenger trains. The main areas of use included the routes between Kempten and Lindau, Offenburg and Konstanz as well as the well-known Vogelfluglinie between Germany and Denmark. During their locomotive life, the locomotives were later renumbered as series 221 and often received an ocean blue and beige paint job.
