In the 1950s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn developed a diesel locomotive range to renew its vehicle fleet. The main goal was to replace steam traction on the still quite extensive branch line network. The single-engine series V 100 with 1100 hp engines was developed for mixed branch line service. Parallel to these V 100.10s, a total of 380 machines with 1350 hp engines were delivered as V 100.20s from 1962 to 1965.
With the introduction of the computer number, the series designation of the more powerful machines was changed to 212. After the classic red, numerous machines were painted ocean blue/beige from 1974/75.
After numerous branch lines were closed, the classic area of use for the V 100 also shrank. As before, local transport and transfer trains were the main areas of use. Some machines were used in construction train service. Numerous locomotives found new owners, including NE railways and track construction companies at home and abroad.
