Rivarossi HR2914 - FS, steam locomotive with tender Gr. 685, 2nd series, with short boiler and oil lamps, Ep. III
Prototype information
The locomotives of the group 685 were the superheated steam and simple expansion version of the earlier locomotive series of the group 680 of the Italian State Railways, whose general mechanical design and dimensions they followed. They were built according to the design of the FS office in Florence in 241 examples with Walschaerts distribution and 30 examples with Caprotti valve trains (the latter were initially assigned to the group 686) and put into service from 1912. Then, between 1921 and 1930, the conversion of a large number of 680 locomotives into 685s began, resulting in the series 685.300 (with Walschaerts distribution) and 685.500 (with Caprotti distribution). Between 1931 and 1934, another group of 50 680 locomotives were rebuilt with Caprotti distribution, a superheater and a Knorr preheater, giving rise to the S.685 subgroup.
The 685 locomotive undoubtedly represents the epitome of the highest technological expression of Italian steam railway traction and it is no coincidence that this machine, capable of excellent performance in expert hands, was affectionately and unofficially called "The Queen". The units of the group provided important active service until the 1960s.
