Prototype information

The 1968 type couchette coaches represented the first series of carriages of this type built on the UIC-X platform for the FS; they were directly derived from the UIC-X 1968 day coaches built at the same time and had the same body structure but a different organization of the interior, with 10 passenger compartments plus 1 for the conductor, with 4 washbasins in addition to the 2 withdrawn ones. The first sub-series of 92 carriages was delivered between 1968 and 1970 and was characterized by 24 Au bogies, Westclimat type blast air and steam heating. Immediately after this, another sub-series of 160 cars followed in 1970-71, identical to the first but without steam heating, to complete the delivery in 1973 with a final sub-series of 30 units fitted with MDfd bogies with disc brakes, which ensured better running quality, and with a Friedmann blown air system, similar to the day cars of the same series. Over the years, like all UIC-X cars, they underwent various modifications, such as the installation of new light alloy doors, folding entry steps and other technical improvements; the livery also changed over time, from the original slate grey colour to liver red/beige grey in the 1980s and to XMPR in the 1990s, the latter being retained for this series of cars until the end of their career around 2010.
