Prototype information

In 1938, the engineer Alfredo d'Arbela and his team introduced a new type of rail vehicle. The construction of the first series of ten units, numbered E.636.001-010, was commissioned on 1 September 1938 and the machines were delivered between May and September 1940.
The young E.636s were conceptually nothing more than a mechanically revised version of the old E.626 and retained some of their design problems: some noise problems caused by the transmission system did not prevent this new group from establishing itself. Two different gear ratios were developed: a shorter one (21/65) for gradient lines or heavy trains, with a maximum speed of 95 km/h (which was increased to 105 km/h in 1948), and a longer one (28/65) with a maximum speed of 120 km/h.
The first example, E.636.001, entered service in May 1940, and during the war, up to 1943, a further 107 examples were delivered by various companies such as Breda, OM, CGE, Officine Meccaniche Reggiane, Magneti Marelli and Officine Ferroviarie Savigliano.
The E.636 group was produced in three series of locomotives. The first series (001 - 108) was built from 1940 to 1942. The second series (109 - 243) was built from 1952 to 1956. And the third series (244 - 469) was built from 1957 to 1962.
